National Youth of the Year Mona Dixon to be Fort McDowell Fiesta Bowl Parad Honorary Grand Marshal < Return to News

Scottsdale, Ariz. – Arizona State University student and 2010 Boys & Girls Clubs of America National Youth of the Year Mona Dixon will serve as the honorary grand marshal for the 40th Annual Fort McDowell Fiesta Bowl Parade, presented by Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, at 11:00 a.m. on December 31, 2010 in central Phoenix.

As honorary grand marshal, Dixon will participate in the parade, serve as a parade float judge and be a special guest at the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on January 1, 2011. Dixon has been recognized as an active citizen and great role model for Arizona youth.  For most of her life, she and her family either lived in a shelter or were separated on a daily basis to ensure a safe and warm place to sleep each night.  Her family received temporary assistance to attain living space, and the constant change led Dixon to find a place that she could call home – the Ladmo Branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley in Tempe.

While at the Boys & Girls Club she mentored younger children and taught them life lessons on being responsible and productive members in their communities.  She is a member of the Keystone Club, a leadership service group for teens.  Dixon also volunteers for a program called “Read to Me”, which allows her to interact with children at a local shelter.

Her education is as important and impressive as her community service.  Dixon graduated from Tempe High School, where she was heavily involved in sports, the National Honor Society, Student Council and the school Math Team.  She finished at the top of her class with a 3.92 GPA and is currently a freshman at Arizona State University with a focus in International Business.

Dixon represents more than 4.2 million young people enrolled in Boys & Girls Clubs nationally.  Dixon previously captured youth of the year honors at the local, state and regional levels.  The Fiesta Bowl is a sponsor of the Arizona Boys & Girls Clubs State Youth of the Year competition. Dixon will join legendary quarterback Kurt Warner at the Fort McDowell Fiesta Bowl Parade.  Warner was named grand marshal of the event at a news conference last week.

The Fiesta Bowl Parade is a local treasure that embraces the culture of Arizona and celebrates the “Spirit of the Southwest”, which is the annual theme. The  parade is a family event and is free to the public; however tickets for reserved seating are available for $25 through the Fiesta Bowl Ticket Office at 480-359-0911 or by visiting
