BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF THE EAST VALLEY’S MENTORING PROGRAMS INSPIRE CHILDREN AND TEENS

Tempe, Ariz. – Jan. 31, 2012 – Anyone who made a promise to volunteer in 2012 can find plenty of ways to make a difference at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley.
Volunteers are always needed to help the non-profit organization offer safe, positive, educational and fun programs to more than 43,000 children and teens a year. Adults can mentor children and teens in the ten Clubs, one satellite site and at the organization’s Mesa Arts Academy, as well as serve on a Branch Board for a Club or help plan one of the exciting organizational events.

Teens in the Clubs’ Thunderbirds Branch – Guadalupe are getting fired up about college and other post-high school educational opportunities after a Diplomas 2 Degrees program event in late January. Volunteers who work for the Clubs’ longtime supporter, Toyota Financial Services, have been mentoring several Guadalupe Club members who are ages 13 to 18 since 2011. It’s all thanks to a $10,000 mentoring grant from BGCA passed through Toyota Financial Services.

The mentors are getting acquainted with their mentees and have met with them in small groups since the fall to talk to them about goal-setting and the importance of getting good grades. They will meet more one-on-one with the Club members to inspire the teens to pursue and succeed in college, the military or other educational endeavors after graduating high school.

Nearly 20 children who are members of the Clubs’ Ladmo Branch – Tempe are meeting weekly with mentors who are US Airways employees, to learn about aviation, technology and science through a Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona (BBBSAZ) program. US Airways provides the grant to pay for this motivational program where youths learn about careers in these challenging fields. The children, who attend Scales Technology Academy, are bonding with the positive adult role models.

The Clubs’ Gila River Branch – Komatke is looking for 25 adult volunteers at least age 19 to mentor its members through a new program. To learn more call the Club at 520-550-1113. Complete background checks are done for the safety of our members.
To find out about mentoring opportunities at any other branches of the Clubs or Mesa Arts Academy, a charter school, please call 480-820-3688.
